Expanding Information Technology Literacy with a Service-Learning Approach

Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh's Digital Citizenship Research Web Site

This project was initiated during the 2001-2002 academic year based on consistent concerns raised in response to early eRulemaking presentations. Various audiences asked: will electronic rulemaking, and eGovernment in general, exacerbate the negative impact of the digital divide? We felt the answer was yes and set about looking for a role academic institutions might play increasing technological literacy beyond the campus gates. The result was a study of the efficacy of service-learning as a technique for enhancing digital citizenship. You can read our one-page summary and full grant narrative online.

At a January 12, 2005 special event titled "An Evening Discussion with Dr. Sally Beisser," a diverse group of 25 Pitt and Carlow University faculty and administrators heard a talk and discussed "Service Learning: Who is Served...What is Learned?" You can view the slides from the evening talk.

This website was prepared with support from a grant from the National Science Foundation, EIA 0113718,  “ITR/PE: Digital Citizenship: Expanding Information Technology Literacy with a Service-Learning Approach.” Any opinions, findings and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect those of the National Science Foundation.
